Life after detox: What to do next?

Making the first move in addiction recovery can unequivocally be the most difficult step a patient has to take. Each step can be a struggle, but as the distance towards the goal becomes shorter, things usually tend to get easier. However, coping with life after detoxification is much harder and some nagging questions may still linger on – what to do after detox; and how will life be after detox?

There are certain steps an individual can take to continue the journey towards recovery.

Healthy thinking

Even after detox, the craving for drugs or alcohol may remain. Shun all your past thoughts and glorify the euphoric time you have had. Rather, remind yourself of the pain you and your loved ones had to suffer because of your addiction. It’s important to think healthy and focus on keeping one’s mind clear to remain sober. The harsh fact is that substance abuse is the road to doom.

Join a self-help group

Each day is a new challenge. And, the thought of going back to one’s habits aren’t going to go away after a 30-day detox. When a person feels he/she is struggling and is psychologically isn’t ready to start life all over again, it’s time to seek help.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) suggests that going to self-help group meetings is an effective way to cope with everyday troubles. Moreover, it doesn’t cost anything and people in these groups can understand problems better as they’ve been through similar situations themselves.

Stay away from old habits

Even before you leave detox, make a decision to discard all your old habits. Try to stay away from people and places that were a part of your old life. According to SAMHSA, hunger, loneliness, anger and tiredness can serve as triggers for abusing alcohol. Therefore, try to prevent these situations and stay away from places and people that were part of your substance abuse life that may cause you to relapse. If necessary:

  • Delete phone numbers of people who you drank with.
  • Don’t surround yourself with people who annoy you and make you angry.
  • Always have a fully stocked fridge so that you never get hungry.
  • Get lots of sleep.
  • Try to socialize with individuals who don’t drink and preferably don’t have any drinks in their house.

If all of your persistent efforts fail, don’t be ashamed to visit a counselor every single day until you feel the confidence that you can overcome the crisis on your own.

“Anti-drugs” and “anti-drinks”

SAMHSA suggests indulging in activities that will keep one’s mind off from drugs and alcohol. “Anti-drugs” and “anti-drinks” are simple activities that can keep a person focused on staying sober. These can be anything – exercising, reading, watching movies, chewing gum or candy. One can also practice mental activities like meditation and prayer.
